Yes. Therapy is confidential, and we take your privacy seriously. Information shared in session is protected and will not be released without your written consent, except in very specific and limited situations, as required by law.
There are certain situations in which therapists are legally required to break confidentiality. These may include:
Concerns about imminent risk of harm to yourself or others
Suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or dependent adult
Court orders or other legal requirements
If confidentiality must be broken, we will make every effort to discuss this with you whenever possible.
Confidentiality for minors depends in part on age and state law. In Pennsylvania, individuals age 14 and older may consent to their own outpatient mental health treatment. This can impact how treatment information is shared with parents or guardians.
For younger children, parents or legal guardians typically have access to treatment information.
At the start of services, therapists review confidentiality policies carefully with both parents and minors so expectations are clear. Our goal is to support open communication while also creating a safe and appropriate space for youth to engage in therapy.
